Every week someone calls us and asks the same question: how often should I get my place cleaned? It sounds simple, but the honest answer is that it depends on you. Not just your home, but your habits, your schedule, your budget, and how much a clean space actually matters to your daily life.
After years of running Yaletown Clean and working with hundreds of clients across Vancouver, here is how we think about it.
The Questions We Ask Before We Recommend Anything
When a new client calls us, we do not jump straight to a frequency. We ask questions first.
- Do you have kids?
- What budget did you have in mind?
- How big is your home?
- How would you describe yourself honestly: do you have high standards for your space, or are you okay with a little mess between cleans?
- How busy are you? Are you home a lot, or are you constantly on the go?
That last one matters more than most people expect. A high-powered executive who is rarely home and has no time to tidy up will almost always do better with a weekly clean. A professional who works from home and can pick things up off the floor once in a while might be perfectly happy with biweekly service.
The real question we are trying to answer is: how messy does your place get from one week to the next?
Weekly vs. Biweekly: How to Know Which One You Are
There is a simple mental test we use internally. We call it the high-standards person vs. the “one more week” person.
Someone with high standards for their space cannot stand seeing a speck of dust. The idea of waiting two weeks between cleans genuinely bothers them. If that sounds like you, weekly is your frequency.
The “one more week” person looks around on day ten or eleven, notices things are getting a little messy, and thinks: yeah, a few more days and I will be fine. They can do some light tidying in between cleans without it stressing them out. Biweekly is usually the right fit here.
A Note on ADHD and Mental Clarity
Something we see often but do not talk about enough: for clients who are on the spectrum or dealing with ADHD, a consistently clean environment is not a luxury. It genuinely helps them think more clearly and function better day to day. If that resonates with you, we almost always recommend weekly. The mental overhead of a cluttered home is real, and removing it can make a meaningful difference.
The same logic applies to anyone going through an intense stretch at work. If you are working overtime, constantly stressed, and you look around your home and think it is always a mess, that is a signal. You need at least biweekly, possibly weekly, until life slows down.
What Two Weeks vs. Four Weeks Actually Looks Like
People who have never had a regular cleaner sometimes underestimate how much difference two weeks makes.
After two weeks without a clean, things are starting to show. There is some buildup. Surfaces need attention. But it is manageable.
After four weeks? The mirrors are murky. The bathroom faucets have toothpaste buildup. The baseboards are gathering dust. There are dust bunnies in corners. There is significantly more work to do.
Here is something worth knowing: if you are on a monthly schedule and you do zero cleaning between visits, your cleaning team ends up spending time on decluttering instead of cleaning. That adds time, and depending on the condition of the home, it can mean additional cost. Most clients on a monthly schedule do well, but only if they are relatively tidy people who pick up after themselves between visits. If you want to get the most out of every visit, it helps to know how to prepare for a house cleaning service.
If you know you are someone who lets things pile up, monthly is probably not the right fit for you, even if it feels like the most budget-friendly choice.
The Client Who Taught Us That Frequency Can Be Flexible
One of our longest-running clients is a CEO who runs two major corporations across the US and Canada. When he is in Vancouver, he is constantly moving around the city. He has virtually no time to do any tidying. We clean his home every single week when he is in town.
But he also travels frequently, sometimes for two weeks at a time. When that happens, he texts us. He lets us know his schedule has shifted, and we adjust. Some months we are there every week. Other months it is every other week. When he comes home and the space is still clean, we skip that visit and resume when he is back.
That flexibility is available to most clients. Your schedule changes. Life shifts. A good cleaning service works with that.
The Myth That You Are Locked Into a Frequency
This is one of the most common misconceptions we run into. People assume that once they choose weekly or biweekly, they are committed to that forever.
You are not.
Most cleaning companies allow you to pause service when you go on holiday, adjust your frequency as your life changes, and start at one cadence and move up or down as needed. We regularly suggest that clients start with biweekly and reassess after a few months. If biweekly feels like too much, you can scale back. If you find yourself wishing your space was cleaner more often, you can move to weekly.
It is meant to fit your life, not the other way around.
So How Do You Actually Decide?
This is where honest self-reflection comes in.
Ask yourself: am I the kind of person who picks up after myself between cleans? Or am I the kind of person who knows a cleaner is coming and lets things accumulate until then?
Neither answer is wrong. We have seen it all. There is nothing to be embarrassed about. But your honest answer to that question will tell you more about your ideal cleaning frequency than any formula we could give you.
If you never want to think about the state of your home, if you want to walk through the door and know it is always clean, go weekly.
If budget is a factor and you are a reasonably tidy person, start with biweekly. You can always change.
If you are genuinely low-maintenance and your home stays in decent shape between visits, monthly might work for you.
Our Honest Advice
Start with biweekly. It is the most common choice for a reason. It keeps your home in good shape without requiring you to do much in between, and it gives you a realistic baseline to work from.
After two or three months, you will have a clear sense of whether you need more or less. At that point, adjusting is easy.
